Denver’s 2018 Women’s March
Last year my mom and I attended the women's march in Raleigh North Carolina. We also went to the HKonJ/Moral Monday march which is organized by Rev. William Barber who is a famous civil rights activist from NC.
This year I went to the women's march in Denver with my sophomore friends and Shane Nelson.
I think I've grown a lot from going to marches and rallies to organizing and speaking at them.
GSA workshops
Earlier in the year I helped run the GSA workshops. Maya Blaisdell and I ran the Activism workshop with Freshman. We created and took students through these workshops to expose them to the history and current issues concerning the LGBTQ+ community. Above is the slideshow I helped create and presented to the freshman. After the presentation, we held a discussion with each group about their perceptions of the LGBT community and our schools GSA. In the discussions, we tried to answer ANY questions they had without any judgment or risk of offense. I did these workshops in part because I know that when people understand each other we have a stronger community and culture.

Youth Voice Spotlight event
I got involved in the planning of this event through my teacher Shane Nelson.
The idea for the Voice of a Generation event came from the Sophomore inspire week, where sophomores get active in the community. The group that went to La Plata Youth Services saw something that was wrong and felt they could help. The sophomores saw their peers suffering from depression, anxiety, self-harm, and thoughts of suicide and started coming up with ideas for activities that would help kids be more informed about mental health. I got involved when we started reaching out to Ignacio, Bayfield, and non-profit organizations like LaPlata Youth Services and San Juan Basin Health.
I worked mostly on promoting the event. I created an Instagram page called @youthvoicelpc to promote to teenagers and give information about the event. The page also served as a call to artists where teen performers could message me to get a time slot to perform on stage. I also went on KDUR (a radio station) to promote the event.
We never would've thought anything like this was even possible without our teacher Shane Nelson. He worked really, really hard on this event and its coordination and we absolutely couldn't have done it without him believing in us, inspiring, and encouraging us.
