Sophomore inspire week at Manna Soup Kitchen

what is sophomore inspire week? Animas designs a week for the sophomore class to get involved with the community through various projects and charitable organizations. Sophomore inspire week is also intended to help sophomores start deciding what careers they are interested in and what they want to look into for next year in choosing a month-long internship. I chose to do my inspire week at Manna Soup Kitchen.

I chose Manna because I have done lots of administrative/planning volunteering and I found that frustrating because it was hard for me to see where all the work was going, what change we were actually making. With hands-on volunteering however, the reward is immediate, you can see the value of your work with your own eyes. But what did we actually do at Manna? Well, our group prepped, cooked, cleaned, served, and did inventory at Manna. We chopped a lot of potatoes and cracked a whole bunch of eggs. On the first day we switched off cooking and cleaning but on the second day, there was a core group of people cooking and another group which did inventory, shoveled, cataloged volunteer hours, and cleaned. The volunteer supervisor was very helpful in directing us in what tasks to do and how to execute them well, for example, we learned how to mop, how to crack an egg with one hand, as well as various spreadsheet commands.

I learned about what goes into running a charitable organization, like volunteer documentation, serving clients, making food, and cleaning. I enjoyed learning about the large batch cooking that we did at Manna; I usually cook for myself and my dad so cooking huge amounts of food was cool to see. I was surprised how intimate the experience was, I was expecting the facility and amount of people to bigger but it was small and it kind of felt like we were just hanging out and cooking for friends.

I don't know what kind of career I might want to go into, maybe the job/field hasn't been invented yet but I know I want to be involved with people and passion
